Edward N. Matthias, Jr., a loving patriarch to his family and pillar in his community passed away on January 24, 2025, in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, at the age of 83. Born on May 4, 1941, in Trenton, New Jersey, Edward was defined by his grit, determination and dedication to his family. He resided in Morrisville, Pennsylvania where he raised his family with his high school sweetheart, Mary Ellen whom he was married to for over 55 years.
After graduation from Morrisville High School, Class of 1959, Edward kicked off his career at Manco Steel in Trenton, New Jersey where he demonstrated an unwavering work ethic that would define his future professional endeavors. Edward continued to build upon this foundation with his time at U.S. Steel where he was a proud member of the Steel Mill Worker’s Union Local 4889 and at General Motors as part of the Auto Worker’s Union. A true entrepreneur and provider for his family, he also launched his own hauling and snow removal business, serving the community for over 20 years. However, is best known for his dedication to the multi-generational, family-owned Matthias Family Christmas Trees, which he ran for an incredible 67 years in the heart of Morrisville.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Edward also had a passion for youth sports and served as a coach for the Morrisville Little League for many years, contributing his time and energy to shape the lives of young athletes. He also served on their Board of Directors where his impact was undoubtedly felt. When he wasn’t coaching, you could always find him cheering on his beloved Boston Red Sox and Dallas Cowboys.
His love of sports didn’t end there, Edward was a devoted family man whose heart swelled with pride as he watched his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren engage in sporting activities. Over the years he drove thousands of miles to attend countless games both near and far. His love, support, and encouragement became cornerstone memories of their lives and will never be forgotten.
Edward is survived by his loving family, including daughter and son-in-law Barbara A. and Francis G. Bower of Morrisville, along with his son and daughter-in-law Edward N. III and Lisa A. Matthias of Levittown and his son Charles W. Matthias Sr. of Morrisville.
His legacy continues through his cherished 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Cassandra S. and S. Mark Clemens, Charles E. and Heather A. Matthias, Brittany A. and Michael V. McTague, Magnum A. Bower, Anthony J. Matthias, Colt F. Bower, Skyler N. Matthias, Spencer M. Bower, Layla A. Matthias, Charles W. Matthias Jr., Evelyn H. Matthias and 10 great-grandchildren Mark M. Wheeler, III, Bella G. Matthias, Maverick A. Bower, Myla K. Matthias, Sophia C. Clemens, Stella R. Bower, Ellie R. McTague, Jackson Edward Clemens, Harper M. McTague, Charley Mae Clemens, Colson J.W. Bower and Carson M. Schaeffer.
He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia A. and Gary Conrad of Port St. Lucie, Florida, along with several nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends who have become family over the years.
Edward was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Edward N. Matthias, Sr. and Helen Katoch Matthias, his sister Patricia A. Steele and his cherished wife, Mary Ellen (Walker) Matthias, whose memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them.
Visitation services to honor Edward will be held at the J. Allen Hooper Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services in Morrisville, PA, on January 30, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and on January 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A funeral service will immediately follow on January 31, 2025, starting at 11:00 AM, with burial to take place at Morrisville Cemetery at 11:45 AM.
Edward N. Matthias, Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, generosity, and deep-rooted values, which will be carried on by his family and those who knew him closely. May Edward rest in eternal peace with his forever dance partner Mary Ellen.
