Gloria G. Reister, July 5, 1926 - July 20, 2016Gloria Reister, nee Gloria Grace Graff, passed away peacefully at her home in Newburyport MA, on July 20, 2016. Born in Trenton and raised during the Depression, she lived there until 1960 when she moved to Yardley PA. After 43 years, she moved to Langhorne PA before relocating to Newburyport MA in 2015.After growing up in Trenton, she achieved her B.A. in Sociology from Douglas College (now Rutgers) in 1946. She went on to a long and successful career as a social worker, first for the Children's Home Society and then for the New Jersey State Division of Youth and Family Services. Until her retirement in 1991, she helped thousands of families in the Greater Trenton Area, working one-on-one with each family to get them through their hard times, assisting them to find employment or arranging care and education for their young children. In some cases, she put herself in harm's way to help victims of incest, domestic abuse, or child abuse. Late in her career, she took on a policy making role, helping the state of New Jersey improve its work incentive and family care programs. In her 20s, Gloria started a lifelong romance with Willard Reister--a childhood neighbor--by asking him to a dance. They married in 1956, and were constant and close companions-a great team. She loved music from Burt Bacharach to Pink Floyd and would often sing around the house, making up new words if she couldn't remember a verse. Reading was a major pastime and she instilled this same love in her children. She was passionate about politics, social issues and human rights, and loved to discuss current events with friends and family. She attended meetings of the Hamilton Hungarian Club in New Jersey. Gloria was predeceased in 2005 by her loving husband of 49 years, Willard Reister. Gloria is survived by her brother William Graff of Jamesburg, NJ, her children Susan Blumenscheid of Newburyport, MA and John Reister of Palo Alto, CA, and her grandchildren Anna and Benjamin Blumenscheid and Allegra and William Reister. Gloria was a smart, thoughtful and caring woman with a big heart, whose greatest joy came from listening, understanding, and helping others. She touched many lives and we will miss her.ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends may call on Tuesday, July 26, from 6 to 8 PM at the J. Allen Hooper Funeral Chapel, 41W.
