Harold E. Fleming

Harold Edward "Hal" Fleming, age 69, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014 at his home in Morrisville, PA. He was a long time resident of Trenton and active in many civic organizations. Hal was born in Englewood, NJ on August 10, 1944 to the late Harold Walter August Fleming and Madeline Hazel Wall. He attended Cleveland Elementary in Englewood and graduated from Tenafly High School in 1962 where he became a championship wrestler. He is an alumnus of Lycoming College, graduating in 1966 with a BA in Economics while serving in student government and Theta Chi fraternity. He completed a year of graduate work in Economics at Georgetown University in 1966-67. Hal is the former executive secretary of the NJ Family Planning League and served as the human services and Appalachian Development Director for the Northern Tier Regional Planning and Development Commission in Towanda, PA. During his career, he served in many capacities for the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Pennsylvania Department of Commerce. He managed program development for the Straight and Narrow nonprofit in Paterson, NJ in the 1980s, and devoted 23 years to the State of New Jersey Treasury Office of Management and Budget before retiring in 2010. A long time member and former clerk in Trenton Friends Meeting (Quakers), and a member of the East Hanover Street Association, Hal was a beloved and active member of the Trenton community and was involved in myriad political, artistic or social issues. He was a member of Occupy Trenton and the Trenton Scrabble club, a participant in the Capital City Open Mic, as well as The Latino Community Land Trust. He was a former associate editor at the Trenton Review, mentoring young poets and helping to publish their works. He founded an after-school homework assistance program at the Trenton Friends Meetinghouse for children of the East Hanover Street neighborhood, and dedicated many hours to the Coalition for Peace Action. He served on many committees over the years including the Patriots' Week Committee, Overseers, Worship and Ministry Committee, Peace and Social Concerns Committee, Religious Education Committee and the Communications Committee. He was the representative to the NJ Council of Churches for Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. He helped start the Burlington Meetinghouse Worship Group. He was a kind and caring man and will be missed by many. His Quaker witness ran deep. He forged relationships between Trenton Meeting and the community that are far-reaching and deeply meaningful. His kindness, generosity and compassion were always apparent. The meeting feels blessed to have had him as part of our Quaker community. Hal was dedicated to making the world a better place. He adored studying history, languages, and art. His interest in public policy, economic, and community development is made clear by both his work history and his volunteer activities. He is survived by his children, Eric R. Fleming of Morrisville, PA; Kevin E. Fleming of Quakertown, PA and Kathleen D. Fleming of Yucca Valley, CA; grandchildren, Kayla Ann and Jacob Dean Brundige of Yucca Valley, Ca; Kaitlin Rose and Destiny Rose Peltz of Lakewood, NJ, and cousins Don Cairns and Arlene Przybylski.A memorial service in the manner of Friends to celebrate the life of Harold "Hal" Fleming will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at the Trenton Friends Meetinghouse, 142 East Hanover Street, Trenton, NJ followed by a reception. All who knew and appreciated Hal are welcome. Interment of ashes will be private.
