Mary Jo Norum (barnstead)

Mary Jo Norum, age 73, of Newtown, PA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016. Born in Champaign, IL, she lived in northern New Jersey before moving to Newtown 27 years ago.Jo was an outstanding cook and an avid reader but her true passion was in the care and advocacy of children. She was both a wonderful mother and foster mother to more than a dozen children as well as serving on and supporting such organizations as Freedom Valley Girl Scout Council and Bucks Promise for Youth and Communities. Jo's affection for volunteering also extended to other organizations in her community including being a member of the Elm Lowne Preservation Committee, Bucks County Women's Advocacy Coalition and Soroptimist International.Daughter of the late Roy and Genevieve (Lahey) Barnstead, she is survived by her husband John, 3 children Amanda (and Allen) Yoder, Helen (and fiancée Andrew Plaisted), and Patrick, 2 brothers and sisters-in-law Michael and Judi Barnstead and Mark and Pam Barnstead, and 2 sisters and brothers-in-law Anne and Frank Klos and Peggy and Rick Bensinger, all of Missouri, 2 grandchildren Nathan and Zachary Yoder, and several nieces and nephews.Family and friends are invited to attend her viewing from 9:30 -11 AM on Thursday, Feb. 11. Services will follow at 11 AM at the J. Allen Hooper Funeral Chapel, 41 W.
