Shirley J. Backes (bellardo)

Shirley Jane (Bellardo) Backes, age 84, of Washington Crossing, PA, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, peacefully, at her home. Born in Falls Township, Shirley was a lifelong Lower Bucks County resident.Mrs. Backes was a 1948 graduate of Fallsington High School, where she was a stand-out field hockey player. She then graduated from the Marinello School of Beauty Culture in Philadelphia in 1949, as well as the Philadelphia College of the Bible in 1983. Shirley was employed for many years as a beautician at the Ruth Olson Beauty Salon on State Street in Trenton for many years. She then became the bookkeeper at her husband's business, Falls Auto Body, in Morrisville, PA for over 30 years. Mrs. Backes loved the Lord, and was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Hamilton, NJ, where she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher. In addition to the beach, Shirley enjoyed riding her Harley Model 45 motorcycle.Daughter of the late Henry and Marion (Carter) Bellardo, she is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Benjamin Backes, a daughter and son-in-law Cheryl Lee and Tim Boerckel of New Hope, PA, a son and daughter-in-law Benji, Jr. and Kim Backes of Morrisville, and several nieces and nephews.Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service at 11 AM on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 at the J. Allen Hooper Funeral Chapel, 41 W. Trenton Ave., Morrisville, PA (www.hooperfuneralchapel.com). The Rev. Ted Martens, Pastor of the Faith Baptist Church, Hamilton, NJ, will officiate. Interment will follow in Morrisville Cemetery.Friends may call Monday evening from 7-9 PM at the funeral chapel.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contribution in Mrs. Backes' name be made to the Faith Baptist Church, 2111 Kuser Rd., Hamilton, NJ 08690.
