Sonia A. Foderaro, age 82 of Morrisville, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. Born in Huntingdon, PA. on Dec. 6,1940, Sonia lived in Morrisville for the past 59 years.
Sonia graduated from Hazleton High School in 1958 and from Bloomsburg University, earning her B.S. in Elementary Education in 1961 and her Masters in 1963. She was a teacher in the Trenton School District for 25 years until retirement.
The end of an era, gone, but not forgotten. Integrity, honesty, strength, and her love for helping others will live on in all our hearts.
Sonia was extremely active in Girl Scouts, for over 70 years. She was straight forward and driven. She became a girl scout in 1950. Sonia stayed active and registered in girl scouting throughout her college years and, upon starting a career as a teacher, her students asked her to become a Girl Scout leader and start a troop for them.
The impact Sonia had on girl scouting involved many volunteer hats. She reached out to volunteers and girls for decades. Sonia mentored new leaders, helped plan events, and provided insight and guidance into ways to implement a good, solid Girl Scout program.
Sonia’s favorite volunteer roles were working on the Silver and Gold Committees with 7-12th grade girls. She received several awards celebrating her dedication to the Girl Scout Gold Awards. Sonia was present for the beginning of Girl Scouts of Freedom Valley and now Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. She documented EVERY Gold Award earned in Freedom Valley since the inception of the Gold Award, and she was an advisor for older girls who had been working toward the Gold Award just as long.
Many felt privileged to call Sonia Foderaro their friend and to that she had many. Sonia's guidance and support inspired girls to build relationships, improve their world, and achieve their goals, which undoubtedly is creating the leadership of our world tomorrow.
In her own words, “Girl Scouts has always been a place where I have felt comfortable, useful, and wanted. I have always tried to make the girls I have worked with throughout the years feel the same way. Being a girl scout has opened the door to opportunities to World Centers like Sangam and Our Cabana where I met and interacted with people from many countries. I have traveled to cities across the United States singing with my Sing along group and attending training events at Edith Macy. I have learned that it is impossible to repay all that I have gained. The more I give of myself, the more I get back.”
In her later life Sonia enjoyed reading and attending plays. She was an active volunteer at the Bristol Riverside Theater. She enjoyed going to the theater, quilting, scrapbooking, and genealogy.
Her family meant the world to her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. We are strong women because a strong women raised us.
